Fun Fact Friday! 05/2/25

Fun Fact provided by "The Nws Norman"

On May 3, 1999, an astonishing meteorological event unfolded in Moore, Oklahoma, which would go down in history for one specific reason: it recorded the highest wind speed ever documented on Earth. Clocked at a mind-boggling 318 mph during the Oklahoma City F-5 tornado, this extraordinary wind speed captured the world's attention and raised questions about the violent forces of nature that can shape our environment. Meteorologists and storm chasers were awestruck as the tornado continued to strengthen. The highest wind gust of 318 mph was measured by the Doppler radar, marking a historic moment in meteorological observation. It wasn't just speed that left a mark; the tornado was 1.1 miles wide and carved a path of destruction over 37 miles long.
