Fun Fact Friday! 04/11/25

Did you know that Oklahoma has a remarkable 11,611 miles of shoreline? This incredible number is more than the combined non-tidal coastlines of the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico! This fun fact places Oklahoma in a unique category among shoreline-rich states. Many residents and visitors may not fully grasp just how significant this is for the state.

The Importance of Shoreline

Oklahoma's shoreline is largely made up of the many lakes found across the state. For example, Grand Lake, which spans over 1,300 miles of shoreline alone, and Lake Texoma, with 89,000 surface acres, both exemplify the beauty and utility of these waters. The extensive shorelines facilitate a variety of activities including boating, fishing, swimming, and picnicking.

These lakes also provide essential habitats for a diverse array of wildlife. For instance, Grand Lake is home to over 450 species of fish and birds, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife watchers. The ecological significance of these shorelines extends beyond mere aesthetics; they are vital for sustaining local ecosystems and providing resources for outdoor lovers.
