As summer approaches, many people start planning their adventures by lakes. Did you know that Oklahoma has the most man-made lakes of any state in the U.S.? With over 200 lakes designed for recreational use, this often-overlooked state is a true hotspot for water enthusiasts and outdoor lovers.
One of the most astonishing statistics about Oklahoma is its incredible 11,611 miles of shoreline. To put that into perspective, that's more than the combined non-tidal coastlines of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico! This extensive network of lakes creates a diverse ecosystem and a wealth of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
Oklahoma's lakes were primarily built for flood control, irrigation, and recreation. Each of these lakes has its own unique features, ideal for activities such as fishing, swimming, boating, and camping. For instance, Lake Texoma is one of the largest reservoirs in the U.S., spanning 89,000 acres on the Oklahoma-Texas border. On the other hand, Broken Bow Lake is praised for its beautiful, clear waters and lush surrounding forests, making it a favorite for swimming and picnicking.
